The task of the contemporary writer seems to be the constant endeavor to turn the everyday and banal into something noteworthy, into something worth looking at. Cigarettes, U-turns, front lawns, nose hair, traffic—everything can be reexamined, revalued, by an author turning their scrutiny in its direction and trying to show it new. These stories (however dismal and depressing they can be) help us become more aware of our shared environment and, thus, the shared realm of human experience we inhabit. Most people can relate to being late for work, to burning toast, to pumping gas, to waiting in line at the grocery store, to falling asleep in front of a movie.

This being said, it is rare that my days include anything story-worthy that exists outside of this contemporary lens. Although I am always my biggest audience and will continue to be the person who cares the most about myself, even I realize that the bulk of my worries, my highs and lows, and everyday activities are not very exciting to the average plebian. I know I am just another one of many who create a blog as a platform and outlet not only for their excess creativity but for their self-importance, for their desire to be heard, to be recognized. But perhaps to maintain a blog is to write yourself into this contemporaneous story. A blog, a family dinner, a gym session, a traffic ticket—all bloggers don’t claim to be different.

So, now that I have qualified the existence of this space, of the words I have put and will have put here, I will say that, sometimes, remarkable things happen. I won’t promise that everything I write here will necessarily worthy of note but I do hold that there are things in life that are worth putting in ink. The Absurd still is out there. People still believe in miracles and signs. Stars do align.
